Modern or classic kitchen – which style suits you?

Modern or classic kitchen – which style suits you?

“Classic versus modernity” is the most important and so far unresolved dilemma related to interior design. The problem also lies in the fact that we often don’t have our own style and we like many things, both traditional and modern. So what to choose? What kitchen decor will work better? There is no universal answer to this question, so it’s worth taking a closer look at the characteristic features of a particular style and decide for yourself.

What does a modern kitchen look like?

Although modern kitchen trends are triumphing today, it’s common to come across opinions that such interiors are raw, uninviting and cold. There is some truth in this, because modernity is largely based on minimalism and very economical design. Modern kitchen furniture is most often combined with:

  • simple cabinet shapes
  • plain, usually unicolour cabinet fronts
  • dominance of white or grey, or conversely – bold colours
  • lack of ornaments
  • high gloss cabinet fronts

Such furniture is only seemingly simple. It usually hides unusual logistics solutions inside – drawers, storage compartments, handles, hangers. It also works great with built-in home appliances.

Classic kitchen does not have to be uncomfortable

Classic kitchens do not have to be inelegant or impractical. Today’s technological solutions provide the same functionality and high quality of workmanship. However, they are characterised by higher exclusivity and decorativeness. They focus on sophisticated designs, milled fronts and combinations of various materials. Most often they are made of solid wooden boards, which are associated with luxury and high durability.

Classic kitchens are most commonly chosen by people for whom kitchen is the heart of the house and is associated with family warmth. However, it’s a mistake to think that classic wooden furniture is boring and its selection is limited. Wood is a wonderful material for creating furniture in a trendy Scandinavian, rustic or ecological style. And if you wish to add some more prestige to your kitchen, choose heavy, varnished solid wood furniture.

Combining classic and modern style – will it work?

The combination of classic and modern style does not have to give shocking effects. Quite the opposite – by mixing these styles, it’s often possible to achieve a timeless character of the interior. It’s worth remembering, however, not to mix both styles accidentally. People who are not professional interior designers are usually recommended to choose dominant aesthetics, and only at the end add accessories from a different style. For example, we can put classic kitchen furniture, to which we add modern elements – such as lamps, minimalist chairs, or small decorative items. Of course, such a combination may also look well with the opposite proportions. So it’s highly recommended to take a closer look at your chosen furniture beforehand, assess the quality of workmanship, and familiarize yourself with the samples. The most important, after all, is that the kitchen furniture meets your taste and expectations.
